Die berühmte amerikanische Sopranistin Roxanne Coss (Julianne Moore) reist nach Südamerika in eine vom Millitär beherrschte Diktatur um auf der Geburtstagsfeier des japanischen Industriellen Katsumi Hosokawa (Ken Watanabe) ein Privatkonzert zu geben.
