Die Erzählung setzt zwölf Jahre nach der Machtübernahme durch Paul Atreides ein. Paul herrscht als Imperator mit nahezu gottgleicher Autorität über das Universum, während die Fremen in seinem Namen einen verheerenden Dschihad führen. Geplagt von Visionen, sieht Paul als einzigen Ausweg zur Rettung der Menschheit den sogenannten „Goldenen Pfad“, der ihm enorme persönliche Opfer abverlangt. Gleichzeitig formiert sich im Hintergrund eine mächtige Verschwörung, die in einem verheerenden Attentat gipfelt. Die Folgen sind riesig – sowohl für das Schicksal des Universums als auch für Paul und seine Familie.

With the third part of the "Dune" saga, director Denis Villeneuve brings his epic sci-fi project to a spectacular conclusion. The film is based on Frank Herbert's novel "The Lord of the Desert Planet" and takes a much darker and more tragic direction than its predecessors. Instead of a classic hero's journey, a story full of political intrigue and moral conflicts unfolds. Villeneuve thus makes the author's actual intention unmistakably clear: the plot is an urgent warning of the dangers inherent in the blind worship of a charismatic leader.
This intense chapter once again brings together the prominent main cast. Timothée Chalamet embodies the torn ruler Paul Atreides, who presents a shaved head for this phase of his life. He is joined by Zendaya as Chani, Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan and Anya Taylor-Joy as Paul's sister Alia. Rebecca Ferguson makes a remarkable return in the role of Lady Jessica, who barely appears in the literary original at this point. Jason Momoa is also back, which is a particular surprise for those familiar with the original. Robert Pattinson sets exciting new accents as the shape-shifting "face dancer" Scytale, who plays a central role in the plot against the Emperor.
The elaborate filming took the production team to Budapest for the studio shots and to the United Arab Emirates and Jordan for the expansive desert panoramas. Working in the extreme desert heat physically demanded everything from those involved.
Technically, the project set new standards as it was shot entirely in high-quality IMAX format. There was a change behind the camera: cinematographer Linus Sandgren took over the visual design, succeeding Oscar-winner Greig Fraser. The background music for the desert world, on the other hand, remained in the proven hands of composer Hans Zimmer.
For Denis Villeneuve, this film marks his final farewell to the franchise. However, the cinematic universe surrounding the desert planet Arrakis continues to grow.
